On Water
If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water. - Loren Eiseley

We are made up of water. We are made up of stories.
Are our stories magic?
They are.
And that means they are fluid. They can change and transform and change again. They can freeze and become roaring rivers and trickling streams and waterfalls with icicles and the rain plummeting down to become a small still oily puddle.
And those tiny drops can rise up again ALMOST as light as air to make the clouds heavy.
A single tear, the whole ocean.
A baby’s new born skin with bubbles in a kitchen sink.
The backyard pool you learned to swim in.
The cool life-saving bead of sweat running down your brow when you pushed your body to the brink.
Your salivating hunger that kept you alive.
Even, the tea you sipped when you were calm enough to let its slowness warm you up.
And of course. the glacial lake that woke up your cell’s remembering of being - connecting you to everything across time and space.
Oh and the vast deep sea. LIFE started there. There are not words big enough to hold it but instead it is the voice of the earth itself.
A dark watery womb. Our first home.
All the water on this planet has always been here and it always will be.
So yeah, I sing about water. I sing of magic. I believe in it just like I believe in us.

I don’t know how many times I sing the word Ocean on my album, STARTHROWERS, but it’s a lot. And I sang these songs to the ocean before going into the studio to record them. They belong to her first, and she sings them back to me. And I am grateful.
